ASBP Conference 2020 about "healthy buildings in a climate emergency"

“Climate change is happening now!”, Mary Creagh former Labour Member of the British Parliament and Chair of the Environmental Audit Select Committee presented alarming figures about climate change caused by carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions. At the well-attended event at Amnesty International's headquarters in London, she demanded to build climate friendly and pointed out that there are already many possibilities available. In fact, inspiring speakers and interesting exhibitors displayed a range of healthy, low carbon solutions that are driving change in the market. The natureplus association informed as an exhibitor about its mission for sustainable construction and natureplus certified products that offer climate friendly alternatives. These products may be found in the free of charge natureplus-database.

Stephen Richardson, Head of Projects Europe of the World Green Building Council, presented a project dealing with the climate effect of embodied carbon. Embodied carbon considers the greenhouse gas needed to, e.g., create building products, which is measured by the carbon footprint. Richardson demonstrated that reducing embodied carbon makes a significant contribution to the "1.5 Celsius Climate Protection Goal". Therefore, investing in building types and products with low carbon footprints is indeed a lucrative investment in terms of climate protection.

..and the winner is

The winners of the ASBP Awards 2020 were announced at Healthy Buildings 2020. Conference attendees heard from the six finalists who presented their projects for the chance to impress the audience and claimed the “People`s Prize”. The ASBP Awards is an award programme that recognises construction projects, which exemplify excellence in sustainability through their products, design and delivery. It was a difficult decision for the judges to decide on the overall winners with the shortlisted projects showcasing exemplary sustainable design, resource efficient approaches, low carbon material specifications and championing social value. “Green Tiles Annexe” won the award in the category “Retrofit / Extension” whereas the “Squash” convinced the attendees with its social and sustainable approach and won the “People`s Prize”. Finally, the jury awarded Makar’s “Geanaisean” for the most convincing project building in the category “New Build”.

ASBP and natureplus also announced the winner of the natureplus Product Innovation Award. The award recognizes particularly innovative and sustainable construction products showcased in the ASBP Awards 2020 submissions. Tilmann Kramolisch from natureplus was very happy to announce Makar`s n-Sip panel system as the award`s winner. Makar developed a clever and innovative product, using solely natural materials. This absolutely climate friendly product also in terms of embodied carbon meets perfectly the sustainability principles of natureplus. Neil Sutherland and Catriona Kinghorn from Maker received the award at the conference together with a free preliminary assessment for the coveted natureplus eco-label and a membership in the natureplus network, free for one year.
