Over recent decades, the climate has warmed far more rapidly than in the past, with sometimes devastating consequences, including rising sea levels, the loss of polar ice and glaciers, and an increase in extreme events such as droughts, heavy rainfall and storms.This warming is caused by greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2), which is released mainly through the burning of fossil fuels for electricity generation, heating buildings, industrial processes and transport. Climate change is increasingly threatening the natural foundations of our lives.

When considering a building's entire life cycle, approximately 30% of emissions are caused by building climate control, and about 10% by the manufacturing, maintenance, and disposal of buildings. In energy-improved new constructions, the relative proportion of these 'grey emissions' increases significantly.
Year after year, the sector fails to curb these emissions
The choice of building materials also plays a crucial role. Conventional building materials like concrete are considered particularly detrimental to the climate because they consume scarce resources such as sand in large quantities and are very energy-intensive to produce. Additionally, large amounts of CO2 are released during cement production due to the process. Therefore, transitioning to sustainable building products makes a significant contribution to a construction transformation towards more climate-friendly building practices.
